iLoad Mini Capacitive Load Cell
The iLoad Mini Digital USB load cell is a miniature version of the iLoad Series patent protected capacitive load cell technology. Since the load cell is just 1.25" in diameter and only about 0.4 inches high for the dome version, we separated out the signal conditioning from the sensor. The sensor itself outputs a frequency output. You can mate it with a single channel DQ-1000 or DQ-4000 four channel interface and connect via UART/USB and start measuring! An optional analog output is also available to connect with PLCs.
To make it easy to measure, log and plot forces and loads directly on your PC we offer LoadVUE Pro, SensorVUE or ControlVUE software. The built in ASCII command set provides an easy to use API to build your own custom applications on any platform including the MacOs, Arduino or Linux (Raspberry Pi).
If you are looking for a compact, miniature Load Cell to measure loads and forces over short time periods in a temperature controlled indoor environment, you will not find a better or more convenient load cell than the iLoad Mini digital load cell! it is priced at a bargain price compared to similar sized load cells!
iLoad Mini - How it Works
Unlike conventional resistive sensors based on either strain gauges or piezo-resistive techniques, Loadstar's breakthrough patented technology harnesses changes in capacitance to measure loads quickly and accurately. In the Mini, the change in capacitance is converted into a change in frequency of the output signal.
The load cell accepts a 5V DC input and outputs a TTL square wave whose frequency is proportional to the applied load. Most data acquisition systems, microprocessors and microcontrollers have the capability to measure the frequency of the signal.
The iLoad Mini load cell has 2 frequency outputs. When Control Input = logic ''1'', the Mini outputs the sensor frequency, Fsensor. When Control Input = logic ''0'', the Mini outputs the reference frequency, Fref. The compensated frequency Fcomp = Fsensor - K*Fref, where K is a constant provided by Loadstar. Loadstar provides the coefficients for the quadratic equation to translate Fcomp to load.
If you use this miniature load cell with the DQ-1000 or DQ-4000 or DS-4000 frequency to USB interfaces, then you can obtain calibrated load or force data with simple ASCII command set. An optional analog 0-5 VDC output is also available upon request.
Using the iLoad Mini in your Hardware Design
The iLoad Mini load cell has a strain relief gland with a cable that comes out and terminates into a miniB connector. The cable has four wires for power, signal and control pin. If you want to use the iLoad Mini in your application without our DQ-1000 or DQ-4000 interfaces, then you can build your own electronics as shown here.

Mounting Options
The iLoad Mini load cells come in two base configrations. One with a dome suitable for only compression testing. You can mate it with an IX-125 or IX-125A or a TX-125/TX-125A for tension adapter to give you more flexibility to adapt into your application. You can then attach rod-ends (RE-1428 or RE-1032) to get a through hole mount for clevis pins or hooks to pull on the sensor.
The other configuration has a threaded stud on one side and three threaded holes on the base for mounting holes. One can sandwich the load cell between two plates or attach ropes/cables/hooks using eye bolts or swiveling rod ends. The sensors can be mounted in any orientation. Does not need to be vertically mounted. The measured force will be the relative force applied between the two ends of the load cell. When mounting into your application, do NOT apply moments or side loads since the load cells are sensitive to off-center loading.

Load Cell attached to a base plate using three screws from below. The load can be applied to the top of the load cell. The "dome" top minimizes off center and off angle loading and provides an easy way to apply axial loads.

Load Cell can be attached to a base plate or a tension adapter using three screws from below. Apply axial loads to the threaded rod (stud). Use rod-ends and clevis pins to apply loads in compression and/or tension.
iLoad Mini Configurations with Digital Outputs (UART & USB)
Simply connect the iLoad mini load cell to a DQ-1000U and then to a PC via the S2U adapter into the PC's USB port. The digital load cell appears on the PC as a virtual COM port. The capacitive sensing element transduces a frequency output signal which is then processed by the DQ-1000U to obtain calibrated forces and output via UART/USB. You can use a standard terminal emulator such as Putty, to send commands to the sensor and obtain calibrated forces. Or you can use our LoadVUE program to display, log and plot force data on a PC or Tablet (Win 8/10). This is an excellent moderate accuracy miniature load cell kit for room temperature applications.

FAQ
The iLoad Mini Load Cell is a Capacitive Load Cell that works on the principle of change of frequency in response to applied loads. It needs the DQ-1000U or DQ-4000U processing electronics and embedded firmware to apply calibrations and output calibrated force values. It is dual body solution with UART and USB (using an S2 adapter) output.
While the iLoad/iLoad TR/iLoad Pro Series load cells have integrated bodies, the iLoad Mini is a two piece solution. Its main advantage is its small/miniature size and frequency output.
The accuracy of load cells is divided into non-linearity, hysteresis and non-repeatability each of which is of the order of +/- 0.5% of full scale for the stainless steel version and +/- 1% of full scale for the AL version. The overall accuracy is at steady state room temperatures of ~ 25C with Tare and Read. Which means that on a 100 lb load cell the worst accuracy along the entire range of 0 to 100 lbs would be +/- 0.5 lbs for a steel version and +/- 1 lb for AL version. This assumes axial loads with no moments or side load and steady state room temperature conditions.
The iLoad Mini load cell is NOT waterproof. The sensor is dust proof and can be used in non condensing environments from about 10C to 40C. The sensor is best used in room temperature controlled environments. Not recommended for condensing cold environments where moisture can seep in.
yes. You can use a DQ-1000U for UART/USB Output and a DQ-1000A for USB/UART and the optional analog 0-5 VDC output. You can use the DQ-4000U for connecting up to four iLoad Mini load cells and get individual as well as summed value of all four sensors. If you need a physical display and don't want to use a PC, then simply connect to our DS-4000 display with an LCD display to show values on a physical display.
We offer free LoadVUE Lite software to display force/weight on a Windows 8/10 PC/Tablet. The LoadVUE Pro software allows you to display, log & plot force/weight data, recalibrate sensors and get remote support. SensorVUE extends support to an unlimited number of sensors as well as all types of sensors we offer. ControlVUE software extends the functionality offered by SensorVUE and adds the ability to control external devices based on sensor values through a USB Relay with one to eight channel. Our sensors and interfaces allow you to write your own code as well! We also offer customization and custom softrware development services to meet your specific needs!
The iLoad Mini load cell typically has a 6 foot cable from the load cell with a minib connector at the other end to mate with a DQ-1000U/A or a DQ-4000U. It cmoes with an S2U Serial to USB adapter included as part of the purchase and a 6 ft miniB to miniB USB output cable. If you need to extend the cable beyond the 6/10 ft then purchase the UX-100 USB Extender cable. It adds 5m or 15 feet to the cable length. You can daisy chain three of these if needed to add an additional 45 feet to the 6 foot or 10 foot output cable.
