Syringe Pump Load Cell Application

Syringe Pumps are used to inject medications at a controlled rate into a patient. Usually these are driven by micro-contollers to "pump" the fluid into the patient by turning a screw which then pushes on the plunger of the syringe to push the fluid out. Depending on the viscosity of the fluid, the diameter of the opening and the patient's blood vessels, the rate at which the fluid is pumped out can change. Researchers need to study this phenomenon carefully and adjust settings for optimal outcomes.

The Challenge

Sometimes a patient can develop an occlusion in the blood vessel because of clots forming at the site of the intravenous injection. In such cases, the syringe pump needs to stop pushing the medication into the blood vessel. If it doesn't and keeps on pushing the fluid then the pressure in the blood vessel can build up and lead to catastrophic rupture with severe consequences for the health of the patient.

A sensor to measure this build up of pressure is needed in order to let the micro controller know and give it a signal to stop the plunger from being pushed.

Our iLoad Mini force sensor is a perfect fit for this application! With just 1.25" diameter size and only a quarter inch high, the sensor can fit right behind the plunger and measure the compression force being applied. The sensor can be mouned into the syring pump using the three threaded holes on the base of the sensor. The convenient USB interface makes it effortless to conect and gather data on a PC. Alternatively, it can be connected into a microcontroller using the UART output available without the S2U adapter.

A force sensor that can be put behind the plunger could measure the force being applied. When the occlusion occurs, this force will build up rapidly. By measuring this force, and setting an alert condition on the rate of change of force, one can stop the syringe pump from continuing to pump endangering the patient's life.

Digital Load Cell Solution for Thrust Force Measurement

Our solution, offers a miniature force sensor in an 1.25" dia. x 0.25" high package. It can be connected with our DQ-1000U USB sensor interface with a 150 Khz data output rate. The interface can be connected to a PC or Tablet running Win 8/10 and is powered by the USB port of the PC. Run our LoadVUE Pro (LV-1000) software to capture and display data. The optional DQ-1000UHS interface can offer 500 Hz data output rate for very fast force measurement for control applications. LoadVUE Pro supports data rates up to 1 Khz (limited only by the electronics).

You can add the IX-125 or the TX-125 adapter to the base of the load cell in order to get single threaded hole or threaded stud respectively attached to the base of the load cell. This makes it easier to attach the load cell to your syringe pump with just one threaded or through hole combination.

How Does Syringe Pump Solution Work?

The iLoad Mini load cell at the base of the plunger, measures the force being applied. This data is transmitted via the DQ-1000U to a PC using  UART/USB output. The USB connection comes in handy during characterization at the R&D stage. Once you understand the forces at play, you can use the UART output instead to connect directly with the micro-controller in your syring pump and offer a complete auto shut off feature built into the syring pump.
