Learn How to Build a Scale with USB Output using DI-100U
|
||
The DI-100 is a digital sensor interface that can handle inputs up to 3 mV/V and provides an output via a UART/Serial TTL port in the form of a miniB USB connector. Then using our S2U Serial to USB dongle, we convert this raw digital signal into a USB output. Users can choose to work directly with the UART output and connect to their own microprocessors or micro controllers via a Serial TTL/UART port for their embedded applications. Or they can order it as the DI-100U which comes with the DI-100 and the S2U UART to USB converter and a miniB to miniB cable with 6 foot length.
Click here for an example on how to interface the DI-100U to an Arduino microcontroller. In order to make it easy to access the Tx, Rx pins and connect it to an Arduino or other micro-controller, we offer the HX-100 break-out board that gives access to those pins without destroying the ability to use the S2U for USB access.
The DI-100 is meant for 4 wire (E+, E-, S+, S-) devices that output no more than 3 mV/V or in other words if 5V power is supplied, then the max output from the sensor is 15 mV. How to connect a load cell to a DI-100U USB Load Cell Interface:
There is a terminal block inside the interface device (under the lid) with screw terminals to connect the sensor. The pinouts are as shown below:

4-Channel USB Load Cell Interface
DI-400U/DI-400UHS
|
||
The DI-400U 16-bit USB Load Cell Interface has the ability to interface with up to four resistive load cells with mV/V output. When connected to a PC, the DI-400U appears as four individual DI-100U devices with four Virtual COM ports. This is essentially a four channel version of the DI-100U. It enables a user to quickly connect up to four 4-wire load cells to this interface, digitally calibrate each and then obtain calibrated force/load/weight values from all four connected load cells via a single USB output.
SensorVUE, ControlVUE both can display, log and plot data from all four connected load cells. |

This is the easiest way to build a scale with four independent measurements at the four corners of a frame/platform. By using this solution, you can save time, money and the headache of using a junction box and performing an analog summation from multiple load cells since each load cell is digitally calibrated and calculated weights/forces are summed digitally!

Use SensorVUE to read, display and log and plot data from all four connected load cells and ControlVUE to control external devices based on sensor values. SensorVUE and ControlVUE are compatible with Microsoft Windows 8/10 on a PC or Tablet.

The DI-1000 is a digital interface with a 24-bit ADC that makes it easy to connect a sensor to a PC via USB or Wireless protocols. It can handle inputs up to +/- 2V with a variable gain setting that can be set depending on the type of signal available and provides a native USB output and an optional wireless output. There is a terminal block to connect the external sensor to it more easily than in the case of the DI-100U.
It comes in many flavors:

For dynamic measurements such as impact force measurement or for testing to failure you need very high speed data update rate to capture the data in a very short time span.
We offer three versions of the DI-1000U for that purpose: |

16-bit USB Sensor Interfaces (DI-100U/DI-100UHS) and 24-bit USB Sensor Interfaces DI-1000U/DI-1000UHS/DI-1000UHS-1K/DI-1000U-5V work directly from the power supplied via the USB port. There is no need for additional external power supply. But if you are working with multiple USB load cells or interfaces, it is a good idea to use a powered USB Hub such as our HX-400 (Four channel hub) or HX-700 (Seven channel hub) in order to provide reliable power to all connected load cells.
For the wireless battery operated versions, we provide a power adapter to help you charge the internal rechargeable battery which can then be used to operate the sensor and interface not just wirelessly for the communication, but also cordlessly! |

DI-1000ZP - Wireless Sensor Interface with 802.15.4 Protocol for Point to Point Wireless & Cordless Operation
|
||
The DI-1000ZP wireless sensor interface comes with a separate USB receiver dongle that is attached to the PC's USB port in order to receive and read data from the DI-1000ZP via a Serial connection. This is the most robust and reliable connection especially in a industrial or factory setting. One can operate wirelessly up to 1000 ft from the transmitter built into ther DI-1000ZP. The max data rate though is only about 10 to 16 samples per second. So if you want fast and quick responses then we suggest you stick to the USB output and consider using a USB extender cable like our UX-100 or UX-300 devices as an add on.

If you wish to receive data on a WiFi connected PC, Tablet, Phone or other device, use the DI-1000U for USB access and the DI-1000WiFi for the easiest wireless access to the data. The DI-1000WiFi and DI-1000ZP offers a built-in cordless rechargeable battery operated wireless solution.We offer a free program on the Apple AppStore to display, log and plot data on an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad. The LoadVUE iOS App works in adhoc mode or in true wifi mode connecting to the device via a WiFi Router.

How to use our USB and Wireless Sensor Interfaces on a Windows PC or a Windows Tablet
|
||
To start using one of these interface devices, simply connect the load cell to the terminal block on the interface device. Install the drivers provided on the software CD shipped with the product. Once installed, connect the USB connector to the PC via the USB port.
The load cell appears on the PC as a virtual COM port. Using a standard terminal emulator you can send commands to the sensor to display loads on screen. If you type the "?" command, you can see all the available commands on the device.
Before using the load cells to measure, you need to calibrate the interface device to work with YOUR load cell. If you purchased the interface device with a load cell from us, it will come pre-calibrated. If you bought it stand-alone, then either enter the calibration coefficient (typically 2 mV/V) into the interface device via ASCII commands or perform a two point calibration with a known weight. Once calibration is complete, you can view forces or weights in millipounds. Please refer to the manuals page for calibration quick start guides.
You can either display the data one at a time or display it in continuous operation mode. Alternatively, use our LoadVUE (for e.g. LV-1000) application to view/log/plot data on a PC.
If you wish to use this device with multiple resistive load cells - then we recommend that you use one Di-100/Di-1000 for each load cell or purchase a DI-400U Interface. Then you can calibrate each interface device to its connected load cell and then sum the four individual readings on a PC to get the total load. Using this approach - you will avoid the need to calibrate the entire system via a summing/junction box.
