Calibration of a DI-1000U to a torque sensor using a Serial Port Terminal Program

The following calibation procedures do not apply to the DI-1000HS-1K sensor interface.

Device Setup

  1. If you have purchased SensorVUE, install SensorVUE. This will also install the drivers needed. If you do not have SensorVUE, use the Drivers CD to install the drivers. Alternatively, see Drivers and Serial Port Terminal Programs to download and install the drivers.
  2. You will also need to download and install a terminal program mentioned in the link above.
  3. Check the cable connections from the torque sensor to the DI-1000U unit to make sure the connections are tight.
  4. The DI-1000U is powered by the USB and does not need external power. If you have a DI-1000Z or DI-1000ZP, then connect the power supply first.
  5. Then connect one of the following:
    • If the unit is not wireless enabled, connect the USB cable between the computer’s USB port and DI-1000U unit.
    • If your DI-1000U is wireless enabled (Z or ZP models), first connect the power supply to the DI-1000Z or ZP unit. Then connect the XBee USB Adapter to the computer’s USB port.
    • You could also use the wired connection to calibrate and then switch to wireless connection during operation.
    • Step 4 will add a USB Serial Port entry to the Device Manager.
  6. The default parameters rate is 9600 (or 230400),N,8,1,No hardware flow control. Press Enter in the terminal window and you should get a response ‘A’.

mVolt Calibration

To calibrate a torque sensor in  lbf-ft  using mVolt/V type the following commands in sequence in the terminal window. Commands are not case sensitive. For example, to calibrate a 250 lbf-ft torque sensor with a 3.02 mVolt/V rating:
ID TQ-xxxxx (Create a unique ID for this DI-1000 unit. The id must start with 'TQ' for SensorVUE to recognize the attached sensor as a torque sensor.)

To calibrate a torque sensor in  Newton-meters  using mVolt/V type the following commands in sequence in the terminal window. Commands are not case sensitive. For example, to calibrate a 250 N-m torque sensor with a 3.02 mVolt/V rating:

ID TQ-xxxxx (Create a unique ID for this DI-1000 unit. The id must start with 'TQ' for SensorVUE to recognize the attached sensor as a torque sensor.)

2-Point Calibration

To calibrate a torque sensor in  lbf-ft  using a known weight type the following commands in sequence. Commands are not case sensitive. For example, to calibrate a 250 lb torque sensor using a known load of 100 lbf-ft, remove all load from torque sensor and type:
ID TQ-xxxxx (Create a unique ID for this DI-1000 unit. The id must start with 'TQ' for SensorVUE to recognize the attached sensor as a torque sensor.)

The DI-1000U will not perform any unit conversion. Use our SensorVUE software to read the values in a different units if necessary, or, if you are writing your own software, read the values in the calibrated units and perform the unit conversion yourself.
